State Representative Schriver has a history of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric on his social media accounts. We are not surprised that he is preparing to unveil a House resolution encouraging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, more commonly known as the "gay marriage decision."
While we respect Mr. Schriver’s right to not enter into a gay marriage, we wish he could understand and respect our right to enter into a marriage with another consenting adult, with all the same rights of people who love differently than us.
This rhetoric is not only a dangerous attack on rights, it’s incredibly clear that Mr. Schriver does not understand the legal system or judicial review.
The U.S. Supreme Court can only hear cases and cannot review a prior decision simply because a State House asks them to through a resolution.
It is not shocking that a person who doesn’t understand basic rights like marriage equality also does not understand how our court system works. This ignorance has no place in our law-making bodies.
While the resolution doesn’t legally do anything, it does send a dark message -- that our community does not deserve decency and equality under the law. We rebuke this pending action, and we ask you to put the pressure on any State House member that votes in favor of this resolution.
